barella.org
If you're a Barella, there are several things we can work out to share the barella.org domain.
- your_name@barella.org can be forwarded to your existing e-mail address. Mail sent to you at barella.org will mix in with your present e-mail.
- You can get a mailbox with your_name@barella.org. With a
barella.org mailbox, you can read mail from any web browser using
DreamHost's Squirrelmail interface. Alternately,
you can get mail from this account using a POP or IMAP mail client,
and send outbound mail via authenticated SMTP. Whether you use
Squirrelmail or your own mail client, you can take advantage of
Vipul's Razor spam
filtering.
This mailbox works completely independently of any present mailbox. You would have mail arriving in two different places, so you'd have to check mail in two places (unless your POP or IMAP client can grab mail from both places for you). If you want to ditch an existing, spam-infested e-mail address, a barella.org address might a good permanent replacement (but don't sign up for so many "no risk, free trial offers" with this one).
- If you want a web page, barella.org/your_name can be yours. I have a finite amount of space (500 MB) and 20 GB/month bandwidth to share, which this goes a long way unless you're planning to serve a lot of videos or archive your mail on-line in perpetuity.
- your_name.barella.org can be set up, but is an advanced thing. If you know why you need to do this, let me know and we'll work it out. Include details on how you want stuff set up: static DNS, dynamic DNS, a HTTP forward, etc.
There's no cost, unless you want a huge amount of space or are serving something hot & spicy that pushes the domain over the 20 GB monthly limit, in which case I'll probably want some dosh to cover the additional costs.
The fine print:
Perette retains the right to arbitrate and resolve any disputes over names. Usually this will be a first-come, first serve policy, but I reserve the right to use other strategies if there is good reason. Any web pages you publish and any mail you send must comply with DreamHost policies and any applicable legislation. I'd prefer if you observe proper netiquette, but really, other than that, I don't care what you put on them.
