SMITH, Emma Rose (Barella) Emma Rose (Barella) Smith, 81, of Tolland, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday (June 26, 2004). Emma was born in Torrington on August 3, 1922 to the late Frances (Guillou) and Clorindo Barella. She and her husband Bernard William Smith lived in Somers for many years and then for many years in Tolland. "Bill" died in 1991. She was also predeceased by her brothers Richard and Ernest and her sisters Livia, Catherine and Rosemary. Emma leaves behind her beloved son Richard and his wife Renee of Willington; her two treasured grandsons, Jason Smith and Shane Smith of Tolland and her step-grandson Matthew Hartzog and his wife Renee of Manchester [CT]. She is also survived by her sister Theresa Barella of Torrington, and her brothers Frank Barella of Plattsburgh, NY and Clorindo Barella of Bakersville, and her brother-in-law William Hall of Ocala, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (Rt. 195) on Monday, June 28, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral Services will be private and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Emma often spoke of her brother Richie, who was killed during World War II at the battle of Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star of Valor. She liked to visit the Iwo Jima Memorial in Newington. Throughout her life, Emma always loved her dogs, most recently her Bichon, "Cuddles".
